I read "The Water of the Pearl" tonight, and was so moved and touch by the beauty of the story--having just visited the Arizona Memorial on December 14, it was especially meaningful to me. Your story captures the experience of the memorial perfectly, and is a story of "many layers" of meaning. The way you tie the experiences of the father and the daughter together to show the universality of the tragedy of loss from two different wars is brilliant!

I loved your book BORDER CROSSINGS! The section starting on page 202 with, "Heads up! The foot patrol is comming!" and ending with "What happens to a man's face when he begcomes a killer?" on page 207 is so compeling and beautifully written. The depth and intensity of the scene is truly a piece of literary genius in my opinion. I hope that some Hollywood producer is wise enough to make this movie. It's message needs to be brought to life in the vast way a movie can accomplish! And I agree with you on Bronson!!!! PS--loved the pictures--what fun--I've never explored a website like this before with pictures and everything--which just shows you what a dinosaur I am!!! HaHa! I even printed off a copy of "our" picture. Tomorrow in English class when the kids get on the net, we will all be visiting your website. I want them to see this! I read all your interviews,too--and your prologue for your new book, SPOLTLIGHT; it certainly is also a gripping piece of writing. Now I can't wait for that to be available!!!!

Carole, Thanks for your e-mail regarding my script. I'm checking some competions out and hope to enter it soon. Water of the Pearl is a touching story. It made me feel for both the father and daughter. Was it fiction? It seemed so real to me. I can easily picture this happening, to find closure to a pain that lingers on, to admit a loss you've denied until you see the name of a loved one etched within a memorial. Toni

Carole, Great story! A very emotional thing, the pathos of coming to terms with the loss of loved ones, particularly in war. Just one thought, though. Do you think you might increase the emotional impact by making Corky a brother of Gayle's father? A revered older brother whose footsteps he followed into the Navy, or maybe a kid brother whom he tried to protect by having him assigned to his own outfit? The story works well in any case. Well done. Regards, Gabe
